We have grouped the most common questions by topic so you can quickly find the information you need. If your question is not covered here, call or message us and we will be happy to help.
Getting Started
How old do I need to be to start driving lessons?
For car driving lessons in Great Britain, learners generally need to be at least 17 and hold a valid provisional driving licence. You should also make sure you meet the legal eyesight requirement before driving.
What do I need before my first driving lesson?
Make sure you have your valid provisional driving licence and any information your instructor has asked you to bring. Wear comfortable footwear that allows you to use the pedals safely, and bring glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving.
How many driving lessons will I need?
There is no single number that suits every learner. The amount of tuition you need depends on your previous experience, confidence, how regularly you practise and how quickly you develop safe, consistent independent driving.
Can I start lessons if I have never driven before?
Yes. Complete beginners are welcome. Early lessons can start with vehicle controls, cockpit checks, moving off, stopping and basic observations before gradually introducing more complex road situations.
Lessons & Courses
Do you offer manual and automatic driving lessons?
Expert Driver Training offers manual and automatic tuition, subject to instructor and vehicle availability. If you are unsure which transmission is more suitable for you, contact us before booking and we can discuss the options.
What areas do you cover?
We provide driving tuition across Stevenage and surrounding locations including Hitchin, Welwyn Garden City, Baldock, St Albans, Letchworth and Gloucester. Availability can vary by course and instructor, so contact us if you want to confirm coverage for your postcode.
Can a complete beginner take an intensive driving course?
Yes, an intensive course can be suitable for a beginner, but the amount of training required will normally be greater than for an experienced learner. The best course length depends on your starting level, availability and how quickly you progress.
What is the difference between regular lessons and an intensive course?
Regular lessons are usually spread over a longer period, while an intensive course brings training sessions closer together. The concentrated schedule can help some learners maintain momentum when they want to progress more quickly.
What is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is post-test training designed to help newly qualified drivers gain broader experience after passing their practical test. Training can cover areas such as town driving, rural roads, night driving, dual carriageways, motorways and different weather conditions.
Practical Test Preparation
Can I book test preparation lessons if I learned with another instructor?
Yes. Test preparation can be used to assess your current driving, identify weaker areas and focus your remaining lesson time on improving consistency before the practical test.
What do practical test preparation lessons cover?
Depending on your needs, lessons can focus on observations, planning, positioning, junctions, roundabouts, manoeuvres, independent driving and the types of repeated faults that can affect practical test performance.
Do you practise local test routes?
Lessons can use local roads and driving situations around the areas we cover. The aim is to build adaptable, test-standard driving rather than relying on memorising one fixed route.
Can you guarantee that I will pass my practical test?
No driving school can guarantee a practical test result. Our role is to help you prepare thoroughly, correct recurring weaknesses and work towards safe, consistent independent driving.
